Sem ka achar is  easy and quick- to-make. Its a healthier alternative to your regular pickles.

Required ingredients

  • 500 g sem (broad beans)
  • 1 tbsp. garlic paste
  • 2 tbsp. mustard oil
  • 2 tsp. mustard seeds, ground to powder
  • 1 tsp. turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp. red chilli powder
  • 1 tsp. nigella seeds
  • Salt to taste

Directions & How to

  • Wash and string the beans , and cut them into big chunks.
  • Put them in resealable bag and microwave for 5-7 minutes.
  • Take out the beans in a colander and keep for about 30 minutes to drain out any liquid.
  • Place the beans in big glass bowl, add salt, garlic paste, mustard oil, mustard seeds, turmeric, red chilli powder and nigella seeds. Mix very well.
  • Keep it covered tightly with a muslin cloth or cling film in direct sunglight for consecutively 3 days, stir the achar in between 1-2 times per day.
  • Transfer it to a clean and dry glass jar and use within 15-20 days.
