Irish Soda Bread is easy to make and can be made quickly than other breads as baking soda is used as leavening agent instead of yeast.

  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 1 small lemon sized ball of jaggery
  • 1tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • 3 tbsp cold butter
  • 2 eggs
  • 3/4 cup buttermilk
  • ¼ cup raisins

Directions & How to

  • In a large bowl combine dry ingredients- flour, jaggery, sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt.
  • Cut in butter in flour mixture until they start to look crumbly. Mix in the raisins.
  • In another bowl, whisk 1 egg and buttermilk. Stir into flour mixture to form very sticky dough.
  • Transfer onto a floured surface and knead lightly. Shape into a round loaf and place in a greased baking tray.
  • Cut a deep cross on the top, lightly brush with egg and bake at 190* C  for 30-35 minutes until golden brown.
