Shahi Daal is easy and delicious dry preparation and a popular north Indian dish will surely  be loved by all.

Required ingredients

  • 1 cup soaked split urad daal (dehusked black gram)
  • 1 tsp salt

    For the tempering

  • 3 tbsp. finely chopped onion
  • ½ tsp grated ginger
  • ½ tsp finely chopped garlic
  • 2 dry whole red chillies, roughly chopped
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 black cardamom
  • Few peppercorns
  • ½ tsp cumin seeds
  • 1” stick cinnamon
  • 1 lemon juice
  • 1 tbsp. mustard oil

Directions & How to

  • Boil 4-5 cups of water, add soaked daal and salt.  Let it cook for about 20- 25 minutes till it is tender and soft. Drain the daal and keep aside.
  • Heat oil in saucepan; add bay leaf, cumin seeds, peppercorns, cardamom, cinnamon and sauté for 30 seconds on high heat.
  • Add onions, ginger, garlic and chillies and fry them till onions are nice and golden.
  • Add the daal and mix well.
  • Squeeze lemon juice and serve with chapati or rice.
