Chana Dal Halwa is soft like a cake and its flavor is worth the effort. You can store in fridge or freezer and voila you will always have something to serve to your guest and amaze them.

Required ingredients

  • 2 cup chana dal, soaked for 2 hours
  • 2 cup whole milk
  • 1 and 1/3 cup sugar
  • ½ cup pure ghee or vegetable shortening
  • 2-3 green cardamoms crushed
  • Some extra ghee to grease the tray
  • Chopped almonds to garnish

Directions & How to

  • Strain the soaked chana dal and place it in a pressure cooker.
  • Add milk to the pressure cooker and cook the dal on high heat for 1 whistle and then another 20-25 minutes.
  • Let the pressure cool itself; open the cooker and dry off any milk left by cooking on high heat.
  • Let the dal to cool completely. Transfer it to food processor and grind to a fine paste.
  • Heat ghee in a non stick saucepan, add cardamoms and dal and stir well on high heat for few minutes. Lower the heat and let it cook till the dal starts to turn light golden brown. Keep stirring in between to not let it stick to the pan.
  • Now add sugar and mix it; let the sugar dissolve. Increase the heat and stir the dal continuously till it becomes golden brown in colour and leaves the sides of the pan.
  • Grease a metal tray; spread the dal onto the tray about ½ inches thick. Garnish with almonds and let it cool. When it becomes warm cut it in your desired shape and size.
  • Store the halwa in an air tight container for about a month in refrigerator.
