Basic Milk Bread has many uses in your kitchen. The immense satisfaction you get in baking your own fresh bread is worth the effort.

Required ingredients

  • 5-6 cups maida (all-purpose flour)
  • 2 tsp yeast
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 2 tsp salt

Directions & How to

  • Take a large glass bowl. Pour in warm water and sprinkle yeast on it. Let it stand until the yeast is proofed. It will become frothy and if it does not then repeat the process.
  • Mix together milk butter, sugar, salt and butter in a saucepan and heat till the butter is just dissolved.
  • Add 1 cup of flour and butter mixture to the yeast mix to form gooey batter. Mix it well.
  • Now keep mixing   the batter after adding ½ cup flour each time until shaggy dough is formed. You will not be able to use up all the flour.
  • Turn over the dough on a floured surface. Knead it well for about 8-10 minutes. If the dough is sticky add some more flour.
  • After kneading the dough should spring back when poked. Form the dough into a ball shape.
  • Grease a large glass bowl, place the dough in the bowl and grease the top as well. Cover with a wet kitchen towel and place in a warm place till double in size for about 1-2 hours.
  • Punch down the dough and turn it over in on lightly floured surface. Shape it into a square.  Fold it like a letter that is bring the top edge in the middle and lower edge to overlap it.
  • Pinch the seams to give it a smooth look; invert the dough and place it in a buttered loaf pan. Slash the top with a sharp knife and leave it covered for a second rise for about ½ an hour.
  • Pre heat the oven at 220* C.  Bring it down to 180* C and bake the bread loaf for 30-35 minutes till the top is well browned and it sounds hollow on tapping.
